Background    

The owner of the Mimosa Beach Hotel, Protaras, Mr Eugen Leontiades, first saw Short Mat bowls being played in Paphos, Cyprus. After seeing how successful and popular the game was at the western end of the island, and falling in love with the game himself, he decided to investigate the possibility of starting a similar club in the Famagusta area.

Through his association with Jim Allison from Paphos, and Kevin Males from Paralimni, they formulated a plan to initially form a Short Mat Bowls club, and hopefully in the future, a club with an outdoor Lawn Bowls green.

In June 2007 Kevin phoned contacted everyone he knew in the area who had ever professed an interest in bowls, and from those positive contacts formed a committee to progress the venture. At that first meeting of the committee in August 2007, Eugen said he would finance the purchase of the equipment necessary which would also compliment his hotels facilities.

The club, Famagusta & Paralimni Short Mat, based at the Mimosa Hotel, bowled it's first woods in November 2007.

Membership

We have 2 types of membership: Full and Associate. Full membership is open to Cyprus residents and Associate membership is open to non-residents. Full Membership costs 50 euros per year and Associate membership is 30 euros per year. In addition all members pay 1 euro on each day they play. We currently have over 80 members. Non - members or visitors are welcome on payment of the daily fee of 3 euros.

Facility

We are an outdoor facility and have 6 mats. Our Summer opening hours are on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 3 pm till 7 pm comprising up to 4 games. Our Winter opening hours are the same days but from 11 am till 3 pm. We also have the use of a club tea room in the winter months.

 Events

The club has gone from strength to strength participating in many inter club competitions throughout the island. We also host some Open Tournaments throughout the year: the Mimosa Cup in early May, the Fraser Mackinley cup in June/July  and the Paralimni Charity Cup at the end of October. For these competitions we normally have between 72 - 90 entries from all over Cyprus.
